I started my business in 1982 and it has been a fascinating ride. In the beginning we offered darkrooms and studio for hire, running courses through our sister company The Oxford School of Photography, and on the side commercial photography.
In about 2000 we were forced to move as property developers had bought our site, by this time the commercial photography had become a much more important part of the business. 2000 also heralded the start of digital photography and so our move to Cave Street saw reduced darkroom space but an increase of scanning and computer processing and a major increase in the numbers of people wanting to learn about digital photography. The Oxford School of Photography blossomed again.
About 10 years later again we were moved on by the sale of our premises to property developers again, this move to Collins Street saw the demise of all darkroom facilities, a continuation of the growth of the courses we taught and significant increase in the undertaking of commercial photography.
Finally in 2020 Covid struck, all photographic studios had to close by law. I gave up my premises and moved all of my operation to home from where I worked for another 3 years. Obviously all courses had to cease and for 2 years most of my commercial work based around the University and local businesses came to a halt, no portraits, no events, no conferences. Eventually I gave up and took up travelling again. Now I am out of the country for at least 6 months of the year photographing for stock libraries but I have retired from my commercial work.
I would like to thank all my clients who sustained me with commissions through the 43 years and the photography friends made in the first 25 years sharing tales over the developing dishes in the darkroom.
If you are looking for a business opportunity the name and URL of The Oxford School of Photography are for sale.
