A short while ago I was extremely lucky to be invited to photograph the Williams Formula 1 Racing Team. The brief was loose but based on the work of one of the world’s great photographers but given a twist that was my own. The client was very happy to work with my ideas whilst keeping to the plan of black and white images for display in their new motorhome that is taken to all of the European Grand Prix. We wanted to move away from the way pretty much all Grand Prix teams portray themselves and that was perfect for me. We wanted images that were not serious and “cooly professional” we were looking for the humans that inhabit those race suits and drive at extremely fast speeds. We wanted the characters to come through, the fun people that they are away from the intensity of race day work. Not only did I get to photograph the drivers but also the team principals, Frank and Clare Williams and the leading engineers. It was three sessions at the Williams Factory in Grove and hugely enjoyable. Here is a link to the Williams Facebook page of the images. Upon the release of the images Twitter went mad for it.
