This December I was lucky enough to go to Cuba for a holiday. Cuba is a fascinating place because on some levels it feels like places you already know and then the impact of the political system pulls you back and you realise it is not like anywhere else. For example, the very articulate vet who couldn’t earn enough money being a vet and so was a tourist guide, this is in a country where almost everyone seems to have a horse. Or shops with nothing on the shelves except for about 1,000 jars of green olives because that was all the stock they had to sell.
Cuba is also different because it is the most colourful country I have seen anywhere. I think they may not always have bread but they do have a surplus of many coloured tins of paints and these are applied to buildings and cars. The Cuban people were universally friendly and generous, I would recommend a visit there.
